Spektrum DX6 Park Flyer Radio

I originally purchased the Spektrum DX6 to use in my Walkera HM060 helicopter that developed a bad glitch after installing a brushless motor. Unfortunately, the Walkera gyro appears to be proprietary to use only with the Walkera radio as it ceased to function almost immediately when hooked to the Spektrum. Re-installing the Walkera radio brought the gyro back but still have an unstable heli that I’m afraid to fly.

However, the Spektrum DX6 is something I can find no fault with and already own 2 receivers for it with yet another one on order at the present time. With a 10 model memory it’s ideal for “park flyer” models and comes complete with transmitter, user manual, receiver, charger and 4 digital micro servos at a mild price tag of $199.00. It does not include a receiver pack since it’s designed specifically for electrics which normally use a BEC in the speed control. The receiver does however have a plug for an optional receiver battery pack and an operating range of 4.8 to 6 volts. The radio system itself is compatible with both digital and analog servos as I’ve used both in an assortment of planes since it’s purchase.

The 1st fixed wing aircraft to receive the transplant was my cheapie JH-7 RTF that had a really junk radio in it. So far I’ve had to replace 2 of the servos that came with the plane (one even before it’s 1st flight) and the speed control which started going bad after about 3 flights. I do still fly this plane almost every weekend (weather permitting) just because it’s unusual and a handful to fly. It’s my “warm-up” model and makes most anything else easy to fly.

The 2nd aircraft using this radio is a GWS A10 Warthog and the one that holds 3 of the servos that came with the radio. This one I’ve only flown once as it really is a marginal performer with the standard fan units and it’s limited battery capacity makes for very short flight times as well. Still the radio performed without flaw for the 2 or 3 passes around our flying field. I pulled the receiver from this one and now use it in my Great Planes Super Sportster EP.

Aircraft number 3 is my Super Sportster EP and the radio really shines with this one so far. Since it’s still “new” there have been only had 3 flights on it so far, but all were without incident. The receiver I have on order will wind up in the E-Flite Mini Edge 540 that I’m currently building.

Before rushing out to purchase one of these radios keep in mind that it is designed for “park flyer” models and the manufacturer recommends against using in any large scale (gas or glow) aircraft as it’s range is limited. Exactly how limited I’m unsure of but will make a guess of 600 to 800 feet. So far I haven’t flown more than about 400 feet away from the radio with my electrics and it’s worked well. I will resist the temptation to put it in my big SIG Morrisey Bravo though and have already ordered the Spektrum 7 channel for it and any other glow or gas models I may acquire.
